Motion 1

  • Proposed: Sarah Harvey
  • Seconded: Helen Miller
  • TCSU Notes:
    1. That the White Book states that college rooms can be “decorated” in any way the occupant wishes as long as it does no damage to the fabric of the room, does not cause a fire hazard and is not obscene.
    2. That each room in college is the home of the undergrad or postgrad who resides there for the year and as such the student wishes to make it in some way their own.
    3. That some students, for whatever reasons, do not wish to eat in Hall and therefore need appropriate kitchen facilities to do this.
  • TCSU Believes:
    1. That some housekeeping staff have made some frankly rude remarks about the rooms of students when no rules have been broken and they are simply stating their own opinion.
    2. That some students have been turned down for furniture requests because one person deems that they do not need this particular item and another is more appropriate.
    3. That people have been made to conform to so-called rules that do not actually exist in the White Book, such as, not hanging things in their window.
    4. That kitchen facilities are woefully inadequate with many having little more than a “bunsen burner” to use for cooking and that the better facilities are not necessarily to be found in those rooms which are farther from college.
  • TCSU Resolves:
    1. To ask the College Council to remind all housekeeping staff of the aforementioned fact that each room is a home for someone and to therefore respect their rights.
    2. That a less arbitrary and more logical system is put in place for the furnishings of kitchens in college and that peoples facilities are adequate to cook simple meals on.

Motion 2

  • Proposed: Anthony Leyton-Thomas
  • Seconded: Su-Ann Cheah
  • TCSU Notes:
    1. There is a substantial selection of foreign films and classics available in the college library, in VHS format.
    2. More students have access to DVD facilities, than VCRs.
  • TCSU believes:
    1. The VHS format is rapidly becoming obsolete as distributors no longer release 'old' films on video, upgrading instead to DVD.
    2. Films are frequently important parts of many arts courses, especially modern languages.
    3. Students would save money if DVD borrowing (or rental) facilities were introduced, as obtaining them from the college library would be cheaper and easier than trekking over to BlockBuster or buying them outright.
  • TCSU resolves:
    1. To raise this issue to the awareness of the college authorities, more specifically the library managers.
    2. To investigate the costs involved in introducing a significant selection to the library, and to determine whether this would mean charging rental fees or maintaining the free borrowing that exists with videos at the moment.
