Motion 1 : Freedom of Speech and the General Election

  • Proposed: Joe Bord
  • Seconded: Carl Dolby, Jonathon Monroe
  • TCSU Notes:
    1. The prohibition on the posting of notices in college windows, 'or anywhere except recognised College notice boards' contained in the white Book (p.14);
    2. The restrictive space of the notice boards, and the individual self-expression implied by putting up one's window poster;
    3. The simultaneous commitment of the white Book to the principle that 'No Member of the College shall impede or otherwise interfere with freedom of speech or lawful assembly within the College or elsewhere within the Precincts of the university' (Code of Discipline, para.9, p.35);
    4. There is a General Election Campaign in progress, presenting important issues for the voters of this college;
    5. That the porters have already torn down at least one political window poster in college;
    6. That in St. John's, a similar ban on window posters has been waived with respect to election material, for the duration of the general election campaign.
  • TCSU Believes:
    1. The ban on window posters is an unjustified restriction on the right of free speech, in the special circumstances of a general poll;
    2. That voters in college have a moral right to see and display election material, and that as adults they do not need to be protected from the expression of views about which they are being asked to cast their ballots;
    3. That the corporate neutrality of the college will not be affected by the temporary waiving of a ban that will not favour any one political party.
  • TCSU Resolves:
    1. That the prohibition on window posters should not be enforced by the Porters, or any other person acting under the College's authority, with respect to material relating to parties contesting the general election, for the remainder of the campaign;
    2. That the President and appropriate TCSU officers communicate, as a matter of priority, this Union's resolution to the head Porter, and to the Dean, Senior Tutor, and other appropriate members of the College Council and college liaison committee;
    3. That the TCSU lobby College to amend the white book so that the prohibition of bill-posting in windows does not apply to election posters posted during the official campaign periods of future general, local and European elections.

Motion 2 : Macintosh Computers in the College Computer Rooms

  • Proposed: Emma Woolerton
  • Seconded: Matthew McCullagh
  • TCSU Notes:
    1. That the Macintosh computers in the college computer rooms are i-Macs, which do not contain built-in disk drives or CD writers;
    2. That only four of the New Court computer rooms Macintoshes, and only 3 in the Burrell's field computer room, have disk drives attached to them;
    3. That there is no Macintosh CD-Writer in either computer room;
    4. That none of the library i-Macs has either a disk drive or a CD writer.
  • TCSU Believes
    1. That back up of personal files is very important;
    2. That Mac users like to back up files as much as PC users.
  • TCSU Resolves
    1. To ask college to fit disk drives to all i-Macs in all college computer rooms;
    2. To ask college to fit a CD writer to at least one i-Mac in each computer room.

Motion 3 : College Bar

  • Proposed: Lincoln Whalley
  • Seconded: Priyen Shah
  • TCSU Notes:
    1. The bar is unpopular, so changes need to be made to encourage people to visit the bar.
  • TCSU believes:
    1. The following items would improve the bar:
      1. Pool table
      2. Table football table
      3. Pinball machine
      4. Jukebox
  • TCSU Resolves:
    1. To have the TCSU Executive Committee push to get the above items installed in the College bar

Motion 4 : Swipe Card Access into the Library

  • Proposed: Gordon Carver
  • Seconded:
  • TCSU Notes:
    1. The library opening hours outside of full term are 9am – 5pm
    2. Other colleges, e.g. St John’s and Jesus College, and other libraries around town are available after 5pm for lending of books
    3. Some research students spend all day in their respective faculties and hence, by the time they return to College, they can’t access the library facilities
  • TCSU Believes:
    1. It is important for students to be able to access books after 5pm from the College library
    2. As Trinity College is an academic institute, books should readily be available for the education of it’s students
  • TCSU Resolves:
    1. Having 24 hour swipe card access to the library
